L&T Construction, the construction arm of Larsen & Toubro, a $ 21 billion technology, engineering & construction conglomerate, announced on Thursday that it will be printing a Ground +1 (Ground Plus One) building in 3D for the first time in India .

The country is aggressively pursuing its goal of creating 60 million homes under Housing for All by 2022, and this success is expected to give a boost to the mass housing sector. "3D concrete printing is one of the technological breakthroughs with the ability to radically redefine construction methods and we are very happy to push the boundaries of automated robotic architecture by demonstrating our growing expertise in 3D printing," said Ms. Full Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Buildings). V Satish said. "3D printing not only speeds up construction, but also significantly improves build quality," he said.

L&T has 3D printed a ground +1 building at their 700-square-foot built-up area at their Kanchipuram facility, using a special, in-house developed concrete mix using domestically available regular construction materials. The building is printed with both vertical reinforcement bar and horizontal distributor using welded mesh that satisfies the provisions of Indian Codes and optimizes construction cost. With the exception of members of the Horizontal Slab, the entire building 3D printed 'cost in situ' is made into an 'open to sky' printer called 'cost in situ' using a fully automated 3D printer in an 'open to sky' environment within 106 printing hours.
